I just bought a used 2002 CC 4x4 PSD about a month ago. I keep hearing everyone talking about getting gauges if you are going to do any serious pulling or making major modifications. (Boost, EGT and Tranny Temp) I am wanting to tow my boat that weighs about 6k lbs. I look at my dash and see a transmission temp gauge in the upper right hand of the clusters. Is that a transmission temp gauge like you guys are all talking about? If it is....is that stock or did the guy that had it before me put it on. Thanks in advance for the input.
In the 02 that is a stock gauge, DO NOT TRUST IT!!! That is basically an idiot light with a needle. It really only moves when your tranny is in real trouble. Get an after market gauge with real time numers and values. You will really see what I mean about the stock gauge.
Thanks for the info about the gauge. My next question is since I have no mods and don't really plan on doing any is there a need to get an aftermarket gauge? Like I said my boat weighs about 6k lbs max. I drive fairly conservative and don't plan on pulling at 80 mph. Thanks for the help!
IMO I would say at a minimum, get gauges and a larger tranny cooler. Heat is what will destroy your tranny and believe me the stock cooler is not enough. Gauges will help save your motor, turbo, and tranny.
If you leave everything stock and pulling 6000lbs conservatively, you shouldn't have any problems. These trucks were made to pull loads, if they couldn't handle it they would have improved things. But not to go against what firerooster said, anything you do to your truck, as in gauges, tranny cooler, bigger exhaust, open intake, will only help your truck run better and last longer. Even if everything is stock, gauges are still nice to be able to monitor what your truck is doing, instead of trying to guess by the "gauges" on the dash.
