ford is really starting to come out with some really good stuff and making a big impact on the auto market and forcing other companies to try to keep up.
Motor Trend magazine tested that focus with the 5.0L in it against a lambo.
Are you thinking about the old gas motors Ford built for the Army in WW2. Thoes GAF gas motors for the Sherman and Pershing Tanks were 1100 cid and 500hp.
The 3.9, 4.6 and 5.4 modular motors use many of the same internal parts. The only basic difference is the crankshaft which gives the different displacements. The 6.8 V10 is also modular. It is basically the v8 with two more pistons added to the back of the block. The saving in this design is huge. With the overhead cam design this motor has 10% fewer internal parts than a pushrod v8. There are other engines in the modular family; I think the new 4.0 v6 and a 4 banger.
WHat motor is a 3.9? The modular motors that I know of are the 4.6, 5.4 v8's, and the 6.8 V10. The 4.6 and 5.4 are more different than a different crank. The 5.4 uses a different, taller and wider block to accomadate the longer stroke of the 5.4 crank. They do have share the same bore spacing and bore diameter. The 2 V8's also used the same cylinder heads, but different intake manifolds because the 5.4 heads are farther apart. The V10 is basically a 5.4 with two more pistons.
The 3.9 was in the T-Bird and it is currently in the Lincoln LS. Over 95% of the parts interchange in the modular family. As you said, there are some differences but the basic engine family is in place throughout the line.
Well, my friends 03 LS with the 3.9 looks just like the 4.6. Overall engine appearence is the same after removing the engine cover. The location of the oil filter and the oil filter and air filter etc are the same part numbers. The crossbolts in the block are the same.
