Check to make sure all your connections are clean and tight, but usually a click followed by nothing means your solenoid is working but your starter is pooched.
Also, make sure your battery is charged. I have seen batteries with 1 or 2 dead cells that would not jump. Check the battery voltage when not loaded, and when trying to start. Unloaded should be just over 12 volts, and when trying to start should be over 10 volts.
There is a common problem with the 1st gen X's.... the main cable that runs from the selenoid on the passenger side fender down to the starter. I had the same problem with my 92... one day it just would not start. Never noticed a problem before the... so it was really quite baffeling. When my mechanic checked the wire.. there was over a 300ohm resistance on it... (it shouldn't be anything more then about a .5 ohm). Once the cable was replaced everything was fine.
Ditto on the battery cable feed to the starter. My 92 had the same problem. The cable looked good on the outside but had high resistance on the inside. Try a jumper cable from the solenoid down to the starter, bypassing the existing cable...you don't even need to disconnect anything.
