No...4X4 Auto is the 2WD mode (except when their is slippage, then the front drive axle is engaged.
I really wish there was a way to disbale the auto mode.. Mine seems to kick in prematurly.. at times I get a poping noise when making sharp turnes.. The dealership tells me that it is normal but I am begining to wonder.. I was in Colorado last week skiing and when I was in 4-wheel drive (Hi) it was still poping.. I do not think it should be hapening..
I've heard it is possible to disable the 4auto mode to get true 2WD on the V6 Explorers. From what I can gather, it's as simple as cutting the wire from the GEM to the t-case that controls the clutches. Put a switch in and you can toggle between 2WD and 4Auto if you want.

That is normal. When the front wheels have been locked to the axle(4x4 mode) if you turn the wheels sharply it will make a poping noise. Every 4x4 I've driven does that, Dodge 1500, F-150, Toyota 4Runner.
This might seem like a dumb question, but what does locking the transfer case do? I've only needed 4wd low twice- both times in my 1993 XLT. once in a parking lot with 2 feet of snow (above the bumper, got me out fine), and once off-road when the rear axle went off the edge of a slope- not hanging, but they also had no weight on them so they just spun and spun (my fault- I didn't have a spotter as i backed up). that time it also got me out, but not as easily.
In the case of your '93, with a basic part time 4WD system, locking the transfer case causes it to send equal power to the front and rear wheels. There's no allowance for differentiation at the transfer case, which is why you can't use 4H or 4L on hard surfaces.
WHAT HAPPEN IF YOU JUST DISCONECT THE PLUG GOING TO THE T-CASE .. WILL THIS MAKE THE AUTO DISABLED? MY 1997 IS POPPING AND JUMPING WHEN MAKING SHARP TURNS.i WOULD LIKE TO DO AWAY WITH THE 4X4 AUTO
Can the clutch be engaged and stuck? Can I remove the front drive shift and still drive the truck, or will the T-case leak oil? I am getting bad crow hop in the front end.
The brown wire is also in the dash of the Explorers. Owners splice a switch into it.
Does anyone have a 2002+ Explorer with AWD? I'm trying to find out if the later AWD(BW 4410) will bolt to a 5R55E. I know it is behind V8's(5R55W), and that they have the same trans output shaft as a V6 5R55E output shaft. I'd like to know if the trans tailhousing extension is the same between the 5R55E, and the 5R55W.
I need AWD in my 99 Limited with V6 SOHC(5R55E).
Thanks for any help,
DonW
