I have an 85 f-150 with a 351-w and a Holley 4180-c carb. The carb needs to be replaced or rebuilt and i was looking more into replacing with an edelbrock or carter. My problem is i dont know which one with bolt right on and everything work( cruise, choke and so on). If anyone has a sugestion please, i am lost.
I just replaced the Holley 4180 on my 86 F-250 with a 460 for an Edelbrock 1406. It just bolted onto the stock intake with no mods required. I have a 4 speed so I didn't need a throttle bracket to work with the kickdown on an auto tranny, but Edelbrock sells them for a few $$. My stock air cleaner fit with no problem and it clears the choke mechanism just fine. I did jet-down to .95 primaries and put in .073x.047 rods and it runs clean as a whistle. You might have better luck with a different combo so check out different jets and rods.
I got my Edelbrock from a high performance shop and it only cost me about $250 bucks. Summit sells at a good price as well.
Just so you know, an Edelbrock 1406 is a 600 cfm unit and it's the perfect carb for your 351. The throttle cable of your truck will just snap on if you don't need an adapter for tranny kick-down. If you have a manual, simple plug and play operation.
The EDL #1406 is what you want if you have electric choke, or the EDL #1405 for a manual choke. IF the Holley is the original, don't bother with a rebuild. You can buy a reman. Holley from NAPA or other parts store for about $350 compared to Ford's price of $700. I have the reman model #4180 and it runs O.K., but has an occaisional stalling fit on cold days. I will get an Edelbrock to replace it in the future though.
I', looking at the edlebrock to replace my Holley also. Do I have to order a bracket for the tranny kickdown also? What kind of hell will I face when I try to attacht it to the carb? BTW I saw a 650CFM Edlebrock at Autozone for $249.00.
Edelbrock sells the throttle lever adapters for about $20. You'll also need a throttle cable plate and they sell that for about $15. I believe they just bolt onto the intake manifold (Edelbrock should be able to tell you where to bolt them), and make everything headache free. You could make your own, but if they have them cheap, I would just buy them.
