Quick question: Is there any way to get a key code for an older F series (1992 F-150)? The dealer is telling me that they only have VIN# - Key code # databases back to 2000 and they don't go all the way back. I'm just trying to avoid calling a locksmith for $50.
I don't have a spare key, so i can't get one made and can't lock my truck (can start it w/ a screw driver though. So i have an unlocked truck that anyone can start...)
The same thing happened to my Isuzu p/u (before it exploded, but that's another story), I used a magnet to get the key out of the ignition and then went to a local locksmith and for I think 15-20 dollars he put the key together and made me two brand new copies.
Does your ignition key lock and unlock the door also?? On older models ('90) the ignition key did not unlock the door. I read a post on here where someone, I think, went to the dealer and bought a new key/lock cylinder and door locks that were keyed alike. I want to say it was a '93 or '94 model lock set. You might inquire as to that??
Iron, go buy a new lock cyl at the parts store. Last one i got was aftermarket and was less than 15 bucks and came with 2 new keys. It will take you less than 5 mins to replace with no dissassembly of the colum needed. The key here, no pun intended, is to not pull the key out. The cly needs to be in the run position to remove. If you happen to loose the broken part of the key or not be able to position it in the cyl later to dissengage the lock the replacement of the cylyder becomes fare more difficult normally involving a drill, hammer, chizel, and alot of cursing.
Get a 1/8th drill bit. Turn the key cylinder to the run position and push the drill bit into the small hole in the bottom of the key cylinder boss in the steering column. Pull and turn on the key cylinder as you push in on the drill bit, and it will come right out of the column. Take the key stump and cylinder to a locksmith and he can use the old key stub as a blank to cut a new key, or observe the pattern of tumblers and make you a new key from that. It shouldn't cost more than $20.00 for this.
When I got my F150, I went to the "pick your part" junkyard and got 6 ford door lock cylinders at $2.00 each. From these I salvaged enough Ford tumblers to make up two door lock cylinders to have the same pattern as my Explorer. I used the remaining tumblers to re-key the ignition lock to match. Now one key opens the doors and works the ignition locks on two different vehicles.
