Hi guys, I have a 87 f150 4.9 with a NP 435 4 speed manual trans. 140,000 miles on the org fluid. Its getting harder to shift, when stopped. I want to replace the trans fluid, to see if it helps. Can I use those qt size plastic bottles that you squeeze? Will I be able to get to the fill hole with these bottles or will I need to use a hand pump with a small length of clear hose? Is there a brand I should try, since it got higher milage? I think it takes SAE 80W. I think it holds 7 qts.
Thank guys
Mike
I think you can purchase a fill tube, clear plastic, that screws on top of a quart bottle. I got one at Autozone. Pretty cheap. If its anything like my '90, I had plenty of room to use the clear plastic fill tube on the qt. bottle. I also pumped it out once and back in with a hand pump. Either work just as well. Its probably a little easier for me 'cause mine takes Dexron III auto. trans fluid and is a little thinner.
I pull the shifter out to fill through the cab takes about fifteen minutes to take the shifter out. Don't know if its easier or harder doing it this way I just know I make a mess when pouring things.
When I was last in Maine for the winter my manual tranny did not want to shift on cold mornings. I changed to synthetic lube and it made a huge improvement. Make sure to get the correct lube for your tranny.

I don't know what is better to fill it, but it might take ATF. Probly not seeing is a NP, but I know the newer 5spd's take ATF. Gear oil gets too thick in winter. Just somethin to watch out for.
Ok, I thought so, but figured it'd be worth pointing out. I don't know if they carried the ZF over into 97 and up, but a 97 with a 5spd takes ATF. But like I said, I don't know what tranny that is.
