water pump help please
i have a 302 with an aluminum water pump that i cant seal. ive changed pumps and timing covers. i think i just use to much sealer on the gasket. when you get the pump it comes with the backing plate already on it, do you remove it and add sealer or a spray on gasket sealer? i need to drive the car about 1800 miles tomorrow and i have to reseal the pump tonight, any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Ford used 2 different water pumps on the 302 . the cars and older trucks use a clockwise rotation pump and the newer trucks with a serpentine belt use a reverse rotation pump and the outlet holes to the timing cover are turned so if you are mixing and matching they will always leak.If you use standard v belts or this is a car then the older pump and timing cover are right butu if it's a truck with the serpentine belt (1) then you have to use the reverse pump and the appropriate cover. You can change them as a unit but the pump going the wrong way may not cool well.
