On a stock 78 f-250 custom 4x4 reg cab 3/4 ton what front and rear end came in these trucks stock. The reason I'm asking is that It's time to put 5:13 gears in it that will turn my 44 ground hags, but there is so much $*** on the axle sleeves and pumpkin cover I can't really tell what they are. Would it be a good to assume that the rear end is a dana 60, and the front??? A 60 or a 44??????? Please help!? By the way I'm new to FTE and it great to be associated with people who love these ole fords as much as I do!!
I think you are right, a 60 on the back and a 44 on the front. They have been known to come with other than that though too so the only way to know for sure is to clean them off. Go to you local car wash and blast em clean.
im pretty sure that they only came with a d44 up front until 78 or so. im sure theres someone on here who knows someone somewhere who had something that was different to prove me wrong though.
my 78 F-250 has 60's front and rear,3:54 gears..BUT... it is a F-250 snow commander..it came factory from ontario with a plow on it and 1 ton springs..so they definitly have both kinds on that year
Mine is also the 44/60 combo, and I confirmed that after I cleaned all the muck off of it. There was a past thread with a link to the Dana differential site and it had photos and other info to identify which you have. My front says 44 right on it.
