I'm just wondering how fast you guys have gone in your trucks? I topped out my truck at 110 mph @ 3600 RPM in overdrive. I need a bigger carb to go faster but I did this in an unaltered stock suspension and stock 4.86 rear axle. I've only replaced a broken front leaf and removed the front shocks. I'm amazed how well the truck rides and steers. NOTE: I did this in a field, wearing a seat belt and I DO NOT ENDORSE BREAKING THE LAW. I did get air from some bumps .
Which truck and which engine? I need more info while I'm thinking up a good lie
I once kept the needle buried for an hour or so in my '86 302 EFI 4 spd OD. But the last number on the dial is 85, so figure accordingly. (We didn't have a speed limit for a while remember?) The 302 is just hitting the hp curve at 23-2500 rpm.
My flathead V8 wouldn't come close 100 - its legs are too long. 75 is about the best I've done with the '48. That was downhill with the wind on the interstate.
i agree wit effie...id never do that....however, it sure will be interesting to see what mine will do when its all said and done with...did some rear end work on it today, getting the 2.71's out of the crown victoria ready to go in and be reunited with the 302 EFI and AOD tranny....its soo much fun to watch my mother about start crying as i chop up her 88 "Vicki" and turn it into a 53 Effie....it will end up with all the goodies of a luxury car (since it was the fancy edition also) and stick it in something that looks a lot cooler...and hopefully with gas prices, itll make 25 like the car did...and it will have the onboard computer to show me the "economy"...fun part is going to be gettin all the computers and stuff out of the car, and rememberin how it all goes back together in the pickup....its all labeled, but that still isnt goin to help me that much
It is a 1 mile long wheat stubble field. It is pretty smooth as it was harrowed and compared to Saskatchewan roads. I was prefering our old trucks rather than newer trucks. I probally have the fastest vehicle in the family. The truck does have a 302 (2 barrel) and AOD. Tim your flathead could do over 100 mph you just need an overdrive, maybe a bigger carb and a really long stretch of highway .
I've had the 56 going pretty fast through a field (though, might not have been THAT fast considering it's a 1-ton with a 10 ft flatbed and the original springs...I'm sure it felt faster than it was. Especially fun considering it has a problem with pulling to the side when you hit the brake.
75/80 mph in the f600. I was following a buddy home one night and he tried to run from me. I had no idea how fast I was going since the speedo doesn't work. Had to ask him what he was doing in his suburban. I am sure he was a whole lot more relaxed and comfortable than I was.

So that`s what that loud bang was? Hope that you can help out with our little FTE show that we are trying to arange for this summer . Check out the Manitoba/Sask chapter in this site and see what you think.
My stock 292/3spd/4.88 set up is no speedster, but I did check it out one day just for fun. Since the speedo is broken, I had my wife follow me and a friend down the freeway while I talked with her to check speeds on the cellphone. I figgered it would be useful to get a "sense" of what different speeds were.
Here are the results:
45mph: Loud, but can still carry on a semi-normal conversation
55mph: Louder, have to shout at each other. Steering becoming more interesting.
65mph: Even louder, Conversation no longer possible or desireable as it takes 100% concentration and coordination to track the centerline of the laser straight highway lane.
68mph: Rear view mirror picks up a healthy vibration and I can't see my wife following us anymore.
73mph: Resonance goes away, mirror back to normal. Hurricane of noise.
81mph: Wall of sound from the 292. I decide I will never go this fast by accident anyway so no sense in pressing further.
The verdict: Don't drive any faster than the point the mirror starts vibrating and the cops will leave me alone!
Nope, it's got radials.
But the solid axle/stock steering traces it's engineering heritage back to Conestoga Wagons...works great at 4mph but keeps you busy at 65!
