What a dummy, changing oil today and stripped the oil plug, it it not leaking now but can be turned by hand, no tighter, any easy way to replace the oil pan, looks like the whole block has to come out?
I know this is disappointing, but there are several options to fix this.
1 - A metal/rubber plug with an expanding wingnut looking thingy that will seal the oil pan without threading in. It's made as a permanent to temporary repair, depending on your desires. It's available at auto parts stores for under $6.00.
2 - There is also an oversize repair plug that looks like your plug, but with slightly larger threads. It will cut it's own threads when you install it the fiirst time - just coat it with grease beforehand and remove to catch the thread filings that will be generated.
3- The oil pan is removeable if the engine is lifted a little bit. If you use an engine hoist and remove the mount nuts, the engine will come up just enough for clearance - this should work for any of the truck engines. It's still a tight squeeze because of limited clearance at the top of the trans tunnel. If you remove the pan, you can replace it or have a machine shop fix yours.
Good luck!
had the same problem on my mustang 5.0. i was all set to buy a new pan, but for some reason i removed the plug, and noticed the plug was only stripped. i would check that first. unless you cross threaded it . $3.00 versus $180.00.
