First Oil change

My parents have recentally orders a 2005 F-350 XLT CC DRW with the 6.0 of course. My question is would this be a good idea for the first oil chnage.

I'd change it at 1,000 miles with either Delo,or Rotella T 5W-40 syn.
Then change again at 3,000 and just go every 2,500 to 3,000 miles for oil changes.

I should point out also after the motor hits 1,000 miles we'll be starting to do some towing or would 500 miles be okay(even with the 10W-30 in there)

Any sugjestions would be greatly appreciated

They say after 500 miles it's OK to tow. I waited until 1000, just because. They also say it can go 7500 miles until oil change if driven in the right conditions, otherwise 5000. I did my first at 3000, just because. Then I'll go 5000.

John,

I did my 1st at 1.5 k, 2nd 3.k later (5k odo), and have since gone to 7kinteravls. Remeber, this thing holds 14 qts (not 5), so overly rapid oil changes can cost you lots of money. I know there are guys out there that change synthetic oil every 3k, and all I can say is, "it must be nice to be rich".

I can't see the cost recovery of running synthetic unless you add bypass filtration and run extended fill intervals w/ oil analysis on a regular basis. I priced it out, and I'd have to go at least 30k intervals to make it worth my while.

So far my oa's with Delo 400 @ 7k have come back fine.

I change mine at 5K just because its easy to keep track of. I don't add well enough to do it at 7500 or 7K. I always know when I'm due by looking at the odometer.

I use rotella 15-40. I think that is the weight the book suggests.

I have a spreadsheet I cribed from a duramax site (& modified for a PSD) that I use to track EVERTHING on the truck. It tracks costs (fuel, payments, insurance, goodies), service items (I dial in the 7k to the milage I just had & it tells me when the next is due), tracks usage & computes mpg, and graphs. I learned alot about excel from it. If anyone wants a copy just give me an email & I'll zap one out.

I do mine every 5000 miles and have blackstone labs do an analysis every 10,000 miles. this motor breaks oil down, I would not personnally go to 7500 miles. I'll dig up my 30000 mile report and post it if you like.

I changed mine at 1000 and again at 3000 and had put 10W30 in it for winter (we are supposed to get 6 inches of snow for Thanksgiving. Should make a nice 340 mile commute to the parents fun).

I plan on changing mine at every 5000 after the next change at 5000. Maybe change to synthetics at 10,000 but not sure. I think the oil analysis is a good idea. I will send in a sample(s) from my first 5000 mile oil and see what the numbers look like.

But oil every 5000, rotate tires every 10,000, and fuel filters every 15,000 is pretty easy for me to remember.

Reid (OMCUSNR),

Would you consider sharing your spreadsheet? You can contact me at sandrail57@sbcglobal.net

Thanks,

(OMCUSNR), Your spreadsheet sounds great!

Would you consider sharing your spreadsheet? Either with me directly or maybe with FTE in the Tech section?

On the oil change question... John, if the engine will see Delo for the rest of it's life, any more often than 5000 mile intervals is a waste.

loredo7mma, on the tire rotation schedule. There's many tire wear warrantees that require tire rotations at 5,000 mile intervals now. You might verify your tire warrantee. Most tire dealers will advise 5,000-7,000 miles. 10,000 might be stretching things. I tried the 10,000 mile schedule, and didn't get the wear I expected. I've dropped to every 5,000.

Ditto this. I changed my first at like 3,500 and have changed every 5,000 since with Rotella 15w-40.

In CA stick with 15W-40 not 10W-30, you're not going to see the cold weather that the lighter oil is needed in. I go 5000 miles on my oil changes and have not had any problems, I sent a sample to Exxon for eval. and they said, "Nothing abnormal", at 10000, and I am considering Blackstone for my 20000 mile change. Really stick with high quality 15W-40 dino. oil and you'll be fine. Exxon, Rotella, Mobil, if it's CI-4, it's all so close that brand differences are negligible. They all are held to the same standards and the higher quality oils will exceed them.
