I have a 78 F-250 with a 460 in it. I'm currently going thru a 76 460 out of a LTD. Does anyone know if the oil pump and pickup are the same? The one from the LTD has a press in pickup. They are both front sumps.
Hi. Ford had a nasty habit of making some odd changes in the length of the pick-up tubes in relation to the depth and configuration of the oil pan(s). Using the wrong one will have the screen touching the pan; this can (will) cause oil starvation.
The only way I know to be 100% sure you have the correct clearance between the p/u and the oil pan is to use clay (or even Play-Dough) on the bottom of the p/u screen and then fit up the pan to the block. I'm sure there's a spec. for it, and someone on this list probably knows it. But I'd say 3/4" to 1" clearance would be safe. You could clay the old parts before you take them apart and measure.
You also have to make sure the screen is near the center so the when the oil sloshes over to one side in a turn, you won't go dry sump.
I use a piece of pipe w/ the same I.D. as the p/u tube and cut out about one half of pipe about 3" up the pipe, it will then fit over the p/u tube so you can use the pipe to drive the tube in. I suggest you go w/ blue grade (medium) lock-tite and clean the connection w/ alcohol first.
