Ok this just started but friday when i was driving to my girlfriends house, 100 miles away(thats what happens when you move to college and she's in high school) i made it about 80 miles and my check engine light pops on, now me being the concerned guy i am about these things, kill all the in cab noise, back down and pull off to the side, the light goes out......hmmmmm, get out check, everything seems to be working fine, hop back in get back up to about 70, and there it is again, ok, getting a little stumped, a mile down the road, it quits with the light, no change in speed the light quits, and I don't see anymore of it. Now yesterday when i came back here, at about 80 miles, it does the same thing, running about 70-75 it cuts on and off and on and back off within a span of about 2 miles and you don't see it again.....what could be doing this???? I have not had a check engine light stay on while i've had this truck, is there any way to pull codes on a light that comes and goes???? If so, how do I pull the codes on a 94 ranger, i know there isn't an OBD 2 connection, and i know its through the box under the hood, but i can't remember what i'm supposed to bridge, etc. to count the flashes, thanks for any help.
At the top of this forum there is a sticky titled "technical information". In there under emissions, you'll find information on pulling codes, etc. You can pull them using the CEL, a voltmeter, or a scanner. Also, Autozone pulls them for people. In particular, I'd be looking for a CM code.
The random CEL thing happened on my 94 4.0 back when I had something like 10,000 miles on the clock. To make a long story short, I found that by using a bottle of Gumout FI cleaner at every oil change I made the problem go away. You may want to try changing brands of gas. Also, make sure the fuel cap is on tight.
