400 Engine Project- Shortblock done

We currently have the short block done and the piston to block deck is looking great. Hopfully we will be dynoing by early Dec. Thank you to Dan Lee for Loaning an intake so far. We would still like to get another intake to compare with.

That looks great Tim, those pistons are right on zero deck, and you have enough dish for the Aussie heads.
I hope someone has a spare Edelbrock Performer that they can part with for a while. I would like to see a head to head comparison of a few manifolds.

We actually cc the block with the pistons to confirm our machining, and what you see is a 32cc dish, including the valve reliefs and area above the ring land around the head of the piston. I forgot to get pictures of this process. Here's the best part, they lost about 65 grams from this, and now they are with in 10 grams of a stock 400 piston. It was very easy to balance.

The block did get resurfaced, Block height is now 10.290". When I machined the pistons I took the .010" off then machined the dish.

Why did you go with a round dish as opposed to a shape to mirror the combution chamber?

According to JE pistons, a round dish is the way to go. They say that the round dish "rolls" the air towards the center and creates a better swirl. Sounds like that's what the X-treme Dirt late models engines use.

I think that the only intakes currently in production for the 351M/400 motors are two versions of the Edelbrock Performer and the Weiand 8010. These are all dual plane intakes. The Weiand has the best specs, but intake manifold specs are not very revealing.
I believe Edelbrock is about to produce a new intake to go with their aluminum heads. It will probably be a Performer RPM model, similar to one the produce for the Windsor motors.

I can check the one I have, it's an Edlebrock, can't remember the number right now. If you still need one. There's a 4bbl holley on it too. I have some more engine work to do on the long block, and won't need the intake for a while. PM me if you want.
