Can anyone tell me where the tach signal originates(or even better..the Tach signal path) on a 94 ranger? I have been having an intermittent power loss/surging problem for some time..It is related to moisture for sure..and apperas to be elctrical..not fuel related....see post under "94 Ranger Loss of Power"..one of the telltale sympoms is an erratic Tach signal..with the Tach sometimes sitting at 0 RPMs for 15 minutes or more but the truck running fine..anyway..when I am having the loss of poer problem..the tach is always acting erratically..bouncing up..down..I suspect it is an electrical issue..intermittent ground or open..so I'm hoping that if i look at trace the tach signal I'll get closer to soloving this pronlem.
Hopefully I understand ya some here. If you pop open your hood and standing at the front looking towards your firewall there is a black box on the right (would be in from on the steering column but the engine side of the firewall). There should be two sets of wires coming from this black box. One will be towards the front and one to the back (thing both on the side though). The rearward one should be the one with the tach wire (Ford books always labeled it as a Tach Testing Wire) in it. Other than that...I'm not much help. Sorry. Hope this starts ya in the right direction though. Goodluck.
JB, other's have already suggested this, but I think you have a defective TFI module. Every intermittant tach problem that I have seen on the 2.3's has been solved with a new module. And I think the modules are the same on both engines, or at least very similiar.
I'll investigate further. The only reason I hesitate to change the module is because I can get the problem to dissapear for a while by shaking the wiring harness a little, which makes me think I might have an intermittent electrical short/open. I have tried to mess around with the TFI wires and have never had any luck introducing/alleviating the problem. But you are not the first to suggest the TFI so maybe I'll break down and do it!
