Does anyone have OASIS access and if so can you please check for the status of my "on order" new truck. It was supposed to be built this week? The VIN is 1FTWW31P35EB40382 Thanks for your help!
I'm brand new to the FTE boards...but a very long time active participant on the BMW Z3 board. You recommend not posting VIN# on the board. I'm just wondering why that would be. VIN#s are regularly posted on other boards, with no negative consequences that I know of, and that includes postings like the fellow made to which you responded.
Is there a security issue with these trucks that is unique, and might warrant the recommendation you passed along?
Thanks for the insight...I have a lot to learn about these vehicles.
Do you mean to say that you believe that keys are in some way tied to the VIN# of the vehicle they start?
Salesman who just sold me my '05 F250 went to rather great lengths to assure me that that was NOT the case. Perhaps it used to be, I wouldn't have any way of knowing, but it looks to me like my keys are coded to some barcode number completely unrelated to the VIN# of the truck. I doubt very much indeed that I could walk into my dealership, ratlle off a VIN# and be issued a key.
Now granted, the security level of Ford keys is considerably lower than more upscale marques (you can't get a new key made at a BMW dealership for example...replacement keys have to be shipped in from a special repository, and ABSOLUTELY cannot be acquired through knowledge of a VIN#.
But then some folks white out the license plate of their vehicles in photos too.
Can't be too safe, right? There are bad people out there.
Couple of days ago One of us FTE dudes said in a thread just go to the ford dealer with your VIN and get a key made, he had locked his keys in his car. I don't know if its true or not.

99F350sd,
Been to Chevy, been to Ford and got keys made from the VIN. That being said, you also do not know who is reading these boards and what you say can be linked to you and your vehicle if you post the VIN. Let's say just for grins that today you post the VIN to ask a question. Then, let's say you see a thread on drag racing or mods and you start posting there with issues or comments. All of your postings now have an arrow pointing to what truck you are. I am not trying to be paranoid but I can tell you almost positively that Ford reads these boards and monitors them for info as do others. As for the OASIS, the last time Matt (AKA PSD 60L Fx4) was my man. Just hang and someone will help.
I read about someone that had a mitsubishi evo and had warranty work denied because they found out thru a forum that they belonged to SCCA. Thats what that car was meant to do and mitsubishi found a way to get out of fixing the car because of a forum. I would not put it past ford or any other company to do the same.
I worked for a finance company some time ago and reposessing cars and we had access to key codes for cars. It was not part of the VIN but the computer cross referenced the vin to get the key code. Cut a key with that code and was on my way. Do not know how these new resistor keys work now though.
Dealership makes duplicate keys...but must have one of the originals for the security coding. If owner has more than one coded key, ALL must be turned in to the dealership so that ALL can be 'upgraded'. If one key is brought in and two more made, all three will work, but any others will no longer start the car. Had this discussion with my dealership on Friday.
In addition with new Fords a barcoded card is given to customer with each key. The barcoded card must be presented -- along with proof of ownership -- before a key can be cut if none is available to copy. This will work, but will make any other keys no longer usable.
Point is, no finance company or anyone else can get a working copy of a truck key with only the VIN#...and dealerships -- the only place to get duplicate keys -- are mandated to use the barcode card and proof of ownership before creating a key when there is no original to copy. The barcode contains the information needed to interact with the security code in the ignition system.
There may be valid reasons for not posting VIN# on a forum -- though I've not yet read one -- but fear of having keys created by car thief from the VIN# is just not one of them.
so now that we have established that posting VIN's may or may not be a security risk, could someone please PM me so I can get my truck status checked on OASIS? Thanks!
