Since August I've got my '85 F150 back on the road . Hardest part was getting the clutch bled properly, but it works great now. Got all new brakes and lines and new rear springs with urethane bushings (did 'em myself without power tools or a torch). The engine (302 block from SVO) runs great. It has Windsor Jr. iron heads, a Crane Energizer Cam 278 w/ .498 lift. Proform roller rockers, Edelbrock Performer RPM intake w/ Edelbrock 1406 carb. and a Proform HEI Distributor. The headers are SVO Shorties similiar to the ones on the '85 & '86 Mustang. I'm messin' with the timming and the jetting to sharpen up the performance right now. This combination seems to run really good on the street. I've only got 250 miles on it, but it makes noise like a Nascar stocker and smokes tires like a drifter. My wife says I should grow up, but I managed to avoid that for 64 years, so why change now. When it breaks-in I'll do some performance tests and report on the results. Meantime, I'll just keep drivin' and grinin'.
Wife's have no understanding when it comes to mens Iron Toys, just as we don' t understand how woman can get so involved in sewing......must be a gender thing.
My wife DOES have a sewing machine; but she also has Calaway Golf Clubs, loves our little ski boat and zooms back and forth to work in a V8 Jeep Grand Cherokee. But when I think about it, I still have more toys.(Are trucks REALLY toys? I think not. Trucks are the essence of life itself. The worst truck I ever owned was great!)
My wife thinks our house has a two-car garage; it's really a two truck garage.
Actually, she's pretty tolerant of my need for iron and aluminum.
How much power you putting out? I'm putting out 350hp in my 82flare and it brings grinns galore. I've run a 76mph 1/8 with a 12.3 et, but that was with a open rear and 3.0 coggs, after i get the 3.25's and limited slip i should be able to get that time down into the high 8's, low 9's and bring the speed up to the low 80's.
Sounds like you got yours running really good. Mine's not broken in yet and I'm still experimenting with carb jetting. Our local Ford expert estimates I should be getting around 325 to 330 HP.
My project's being done with a retirement budget, so I gotta go gradually. I want to change the rear gear to 4.10, then get it dyno-tuned. Now I've got a 3.00 w/TracLoc in a 9" Ford with a Ford TOD 4spd manual OD. These Ford Flareside Short-beds are so light, their hard to hook up when you dump the clutch. Also, all the tracks around here(SE Michigan) are closed for the season.
Next month or so will tell how good it's gonna be. I' try to get some results and pictures if possible and get back to you. ( Hey, Busch just won the Nextel Cup for Jack Roush! Go Ford!)
If you drive your truck regularly i would stick to a 3.50 rear maybe a 3.73, cause that 4.10 will kill your highway cruise-ability, i just took my flare (they weigh about 3650-3725lbs with driver and full tank of gas) for a drive to see how much of an improvement the gear change would make a difference, and boy did it ever, now i have to actually give it a try in order to smoke the rear hides.
If i were you i would get rid of that od tranny you got in there. When i swapped the one i had in mine it was jumpin out of first and second constanly and od was toast. I swapped in a toploader 4-sp out of a 66 ranchero, it was the best mod i did to the truck, and other than the pos factory shifter (waitin for my hurst shifter from summit, dang thing is on backorder). But i sure know about the buildin on a budget as the motor for my truck was built 3 years ago.
