Bronco II 2.9L 1986 Can anyone give me any information about code 89. Is the exhaust heat control computer controlled or is it a solenoid? Where is it located?
code 89 refers to the Torque converter clutch (TCC or CCO) override solenoid circuit. Transmission related, and an EEC-IV computer isn't very sensitive to faults in that circuit. Essentially only two conditions that will cause that code: 1) A break in the circuit or 2) a short to ground. Get a wiring diagram (www.autozone.com has wiring diagrams as part of their vehicle repair guides), and trace that circuit until you find the fault.
'86 and '87 A4LD had a computer controlled TCC solenoid and vacuum controlled 3-4 shift. This is often referred to as a one solenoid valve body.
'88 and later A4LD used two solenoids -- 1) the same as the one solenoid version to control TCC lockup. 2) EEC-IV control over the 3-4 shift.
