I have a 1980 Custom F-250 with a bored out 351. It has a cold hearted engine and needs sometime to warm up but other than that it will run. Just recently though I went to start it and had great difficulty for the battery does not seem to hold a charge any longer. It is either the alternator or the battery is old that I can fix, but the main problem I am having is when it is running and I go to put it in gear it stalls imediatly. I have tried giving it extra gas and putting it in gear and it still stalls. I am open to any suggestions on what the problem may be for I need to get this fixed ASAP for it is my only vehicle due to my 1995 Chrysler Concorde throwing a rod through the engine block.
Many things can cause this. Plugged fuel filter, choke not opening properly, plugged up air filter, plugged up pcv valve(more likely to create smoke and rich running/excessive oil consumption). Timing could be off, trans filter(if automatic) could be plugged up, the list goes on. Give us more information on what you've changed recently, what carb you have on, as well as how it idles.(rich, lean, smooth, does it produce good vacuum?) What are your timing specs? more information is needed here to really be of any help.
The idle seems to be set low and needs to be turned up. I was also told the carborator needs adjusted but it ran fine until a few days ago. It was kind of sudden. The timeing I think may also be off. I recently just replaced the fuel pump and checked the filter and it is fine. Other than that I don't have much information for I have not owned the truck long. It does have a gasket leak so oil does leak out onto the engine and that is going to be getting fixed.
I'd try a trickle charge, overnight on the battery to begin with, and then get the charging system tested. No point if the battery is dead, for any reason. Eliminate one thing at a time. The charging system could be related to it not running after being put in gear, if the battery is run down, and the alternator doesn't have enough of it's own juice to keep it running, it could very well be as simple as an alternator. You recently changed the fuel pump. Fuel filters are cheap, would replace just for kicks. Is the pressure regulator working properly? You will need to charge the battery fully first, and see from there. I'd get the battery load tested from a full charge, as well as put a multi-testor/ohm meter to the battery set on DC 12v mode to see where the charge is at with the vehical running. If it idles around 12.5 and bumps up to around 14.5 max your alternator should be fine. If there is no change in voltage with the increase in rpm, your alternator, or voltage regulator have gone south. Post back from here and we'll troubleshoot which it might be.
just here recently I had similar problem with my buick I know there two totaly different vehicles. But I lost my alt. when the battery got to the point were it was to lo it acted like there was no fuel. Back fired spit and sputtered. at stop lights I had to keep foot on gas and brake to get it to my shop/work. IMO I would start with the obvious first. If you still have all the computer controled stuff on it there may not be enough power to run it correctly. just a thought.
