Aerostar Transmission

Hi All,
It's good to be here and I am hoping that one of the super knowledgeable people on this site can help me. My 92 Aerostar, rear wheel drive, extended body, automatic, small V6 with a distributor, suddenly has trans problems. It was fine until two days ago when I arrived home. The next morning, when I started the engine and placed the gear selector in OD, it would not move faster than 1-2 MPH. In D it will operate normally and I can manually shift into OD at 50-55 MPH. But, when I stop, if I am still in OD, it will not move forward. Reving the engine does not help. Fluid level is good. There are no external leaks, although the transmission does lose fluid somewhere. Around a quart a week with daily mileage of 55-60 miles. Reverse is okay. I have been told the torque converter clutch pack is shot and I need an overhaul. Is it possible it could be something else? Hoping to hear from someone.

I have a 90 with 4.0 2wd Aerostar, once a few years ago in OD the trans would sift in and out of OD when I put on the gas. Transmision shop said it was the torque converter locking and unlocking, only did this in OD. After it was replaced it still did it. Turnned out to be a plugged fuel filter.

'92 with a distributor. You must have the 3.0L engine. That means modulator problem, especially if you are losing fluid and it's not leaking. It's cheap, about 10-20 bucks and easy to replace. Just replace it. What do you have to lose but 20 bucks and a beautiful weekend. Beware of the "I lost the black pin" syndrome, however.

Copper_90680 nailed it, I agree with the bad modulator problem. A quart low on these transmissions makes them behave strangely.

My sincere apprecition to all who replied. This weekend, after Turkey Day, I will replace the vacuum modulator. It's worth the twenty or so dollars to see if it helps. All good advice. I will post the results and I WILL watch for the infamous pin. Thanks to everyone.
