driving a 91 Bronco w/ 5.0L and E40D trans... I'm expieriencing a vibration when i step on the gas and it downshifts. I'm pretty sure this is coming from trans. A guy i know said he was told it was a problem w/ the torque converters. I was instructed to buy Mercon trans lube. I did and it seemed like it helped for the first week but now its back and getting frustrating. The vibration happens most of the time when the truck downshifts from 4th gear. Never when its driven hard, only when im babying the gas.
I had a vibration that i was only getting when I stepped on the gas, but not when I was coasting. It turned out to be a bad Universal Joint. An out of balanced drive shaft can also cause vibration only when accelerating.
It sounds like it might be shudder in the torque converter lockup clutch. My truck does this between 30 and 50 MPH at light throttle in 4th gear. Pushing O/D cancel helps, as does romping on the gas. The former because it reduces torque load through the converter, the latter probably because is increases line pressure.
Changing the fluid and filter cleared this up for me for about a year of light use, but it came back. The trans has 160000 miles on it, so wear in the torque converter clutch could be expected. I pretty much ignore it now. The trucks had some of these problems even when new -- do a yahoo search on "E4OD shudder".
