Question HELP......Need recommendations for best syn. oil.

Hey fellow PSD owners! I sure could use your help here. I normally use motorcraft 15W-40 but since its starting to get cold here, especially in the mornings, I'm thinking that I might try a synthetic oil so it flows easier on those cold morning start ups. Does anyone know if the engine block heater heats the oil as well as the engine coolant? Thanks a million folks....I sure do appreciate your assistance! Later!

Well csherman...I know you don't know...but, your main question is like hot embers in a fire. You stir 'em up and here come the flames.

You may want to do a forum search on "synthetic oil" get your favorite beverage and read for a while. You will see what I mean.

Now with that said..I personally use Mobil Truck & SUV found at many Walmarts. Just 'cause I want to.

Good luck and good reading.

Nothing quite like a good ol'fashioned oil war

IMO (otherwise said: Don't shoot me- I'm just the piano player) 03 CC 6.0 The Mobil 1 SUV 5w40 is also my choice...Several factors have lead to this opinion:

1) Cold weather starting
2) FMC recommending the lighter weight 10w30 in the 6.0 (so says local dealer & eched on the FTE)
3) Longer/Extended drain intervals (5,000 miles vs 3,000) yield similar cost with more benefits
4) Slightly better (.5-1) mpg: With 41,986 miles I have gone around the block more than once!

FYI- I would have considered Royal Purple if they offered a 5w40

for the winter, I use the Rotella T synthetic 5W-40, only because it costs considerably less than the Mobil 1 Truck/SUV and I cannot find API CI-4 oil in 10W-30. Looking at the charts 15W-40 is good to 20F. Which here in Central Texas might happen rarely. My $.02

Mobil Delvac 1 5w-40 in both my Ford Diesels as well as the guys at the dealer. In my trucks I saw a 1-1.5mpg increase when switching.

Best of Luck,
Corey

Just out of curiosity, have you ever analyzed whether or not you are getting a payback on that 1 to 1.5 mpg, considering the cost of Mobil Delvac 1?

I think I tried once to analyze that, kind of figured it was just peace of mind for me, I know MD1 is expensive...however for me it is my history with MD in extreme conditions and the performance/reliability I witness with my own eyes that keeps me coming back for more, now mind you I only run MD1 in my truck all the rest of my cars and stuff use everything form Pennzoil to Valvoline.
There is no doubt in my mind you can quantify the cost….but I am sure I will be on the wrong side of that equation.
