I am doing a base/clear paint job on my Bronco. I want to lay a couple of layers of color then my clear coat. I have been told by a few people a few diff. things so maby I can get some advice form you all. I have been told to wet sand the "orange peel" in-between each of the color coats. Others have told me to lay all the layers then sand right before the clear. Any suggestions? Thanks

In most cases, you will not experience orange peel in the basecoat and no sanding is required.
Sanding on basecoat will depend on your product. You can sand basecoat if it is a solid color. You can not sand the final coat of basecoat, if is a metallic color.
Colorsanding is usually done on the clearcoat to remove the orange peel. The normal procedure is to finish with all the clearcoat spraying and then do the sanding/buffing. Another way is to spray on a couple coats of clearcoat, do your sanding, and then spray on a final coat of clearcoat. This method produces a great looking finish and no buffing is required.
i agree withAekisu you should not have to sand the base color unless you do not like the way it looks (blotches ,tiger stripes etc) or something happens to get into it like a bug or a hair . the only thing i would add is make sure you have good color coverage on all the edges of the panels ,wheel openings etc before you clearcoat anything . i have found some types of clears do not like to have a base color applied over fresh clear as they can lift and if that happens it can be a bear to fix .
Thanks for your advice. But sadly now the painting has to be put off. Someone kicked in the rear window and the top glass. They tore out my sterio system and my new GT Grant steering wheel. I hate people who steal. I might as well wiped my butt with $3500 and flushed it. Why can't people just get a job and buy their own crap. And the cops were no help. They said oh well, contact your insurance company. GRRRRRRRRRR. Sorry I'm ranting. Be nice to your neighbors. If you steal may your hands fall off!
sorry to hear about you loss. i had a similiar thing happen with a 1971 dart swinger car was locked in a lock garage someone broke in and stole the stereo out of it , the insurance co. said that they were not going to cover the loss because it was not installed at the factory . i told them that if they thought i was going to drive from vt. state to detriot to have them install a stereo in a 30 year old car they were nuts and because the car had comprehensive coverage that they were going to replace it or we would be seeing each other in court . 3 days later i got a phone call telling me they would replace the system . i too try to mind my own business and treat everyone as i want to be treated but sometimes you just cant win . oh well i hope yours works out to your satisfaction as it did in my case . look at it this way you still have the truck . good luck
Sadly I did not get the satisfaction you did. My insurance company said that since they switched to a new policy structre 2 months ago they would cover the glass with a deductable but not the felt or the weather stripping taht was ripped in the top. (Top channel) Their new structure states that sterios need to be insured under their new sterio insurance policy. My agent neglected to mention that to me. The friggin glass all together is $250 for my deductables and the striping and felt adds up to $95 plus S&H. And because I never was told about their new sterio policy I was outta luck on my system. 1-Pioneer deck=$250 1-Amp=$850 2-Subs+Box=$800 1-5 Farad Cap=$200. I just wish I was closer to my gun and door when the alarm went off. The worst part is I think I know who it was but can not prove a thing. The box takes 3 people to lift. They did it fast. Only 1 person knew what was in there and where it was mounted. But no proof no cops no jail. Thank for your responce though. Hopfuly within a few months I can fix and paint this thing. I keep ya'll updated.
