Changed Door Lock Actuators
Well for the past few months or so, I have been dealing with very slow moving door looks in my 2000 SD and today I finally bit the bullet and spent $106 of a pair of new actuators. The new actautors are new style that replaced the ones that were in the truck. I had done some research here on FTE and found some instructions on removal and instalation and they did not get me too far. After about 45 minutes of digging around in the drivers side door, I had removed the old actuator
. Total time to complete the drivers side was about an hour. After the trial and error on the left side, the passenger side took less than 10 minutes. These are the steps that worked well for me and maybe someone else could use them:1. Remove the door panel
2. Peel back the greyish materail to gain access into the inner door( I think this material has to do with sound proofing...not sure though.)
3. With a thin flat blade screwdriver, lift up on the locking clip that holds the wire harness in place on the lower 1/3 of the actuator and disconnect the harness.
4. With a larger flat blade screwdriver, pry the lock actuator twoards the outide of the door (opposite the side you are working on). The actautor is on a set of slides and will slide right off of the door latch itself. There is NO NEED to disconect ANY linkages or pushrods. The actautor has a pin that slides into a bellcrank that is attached to the door latch; so there is no need to disconnect anything.
With the old actuator removed, you can see that there has been a remodeling of the actuator.
5. The new actuator slides right back in the way the old one came out. Just make sure that the actuating pin slides into the belcrank on the door latch.
6. Re-attach the wire harness and re-assemble the door.
Simple...right?
Hope this helps anyone looking to replace weak door locks.
