Ive been researching a bunch of mods to do to my 78 bronco and one area that is a bit foggy to me is the steering. I've seen alot of aftermarket stuff from AGR where you can send in the 73-79 PS box to be modified for their pumps and so forth, but I have also heard through my travels there are other known modifications you can do yourself to the box. This involves drilling bigger passages as one of the tricks. Anyone out there with any stories?
I believe the passage mods that you're referring to are not on the box itself but rather to the pressure bypass valve in the steering box. Do a search on Pirate4x4.com for more information, I believe they have an article in their tech section outlining it. FWIW I've read a lot of reports of people having trouble with their pumps after the mod. Personally I would not recommend it. What would really improve steering power is to upgrade to a Saginaw pump rather than the stock Ford pump. Ford pumps are weak and don't seem to put out good pressure. Sags can be found on most any Chevy or on late 70's Ford cars. They look like a canned ham. If you find a car with the same size engine as your truck has you can take the brackets and all to make it bolt right up.
EDITHere's the site that outlines the modification to the pump. Again, I've heard lots of bad news about it though I have no personal experience in the pump mods: http://westtexasoffroad.homestead.co...rsteering.html
