Should be 6 1/2s up front and 5x7s in the rear. You should have a 4" depth max, which shouldn't be too hard to comply with, but just something to keep in mind.
You CAN put a 5 1/4 in the front, but you'll have to add on some back straps to make the holes line up. So why bother? It's designed for a 6 1/2, which will be a much better speaker than a 5 1/4.
A 5x7 is a 6x8, they're the same thing. Why? No clue, but if you look at almost any 5x7 speaker, it will say both 5x7 and 6x8.
You won't be able to put a 6x9 in there without some serious mods, and with them being rear speakers, in a regular cab truck it would be a waste of your time. Also, with a 6x9 you'll be limited on the speakers you can use because of depth.
So i should go with a 6 1/2 in the front and 5X7's in the back?
I'm 6'6 and i Have to have the bench ALL the way back so i cant put a sub box back there(plus i want clarity not bass)...I've got a pioneer deck and the stock speakers (clarion) they work well, but are really crappy at a high decibel. (which i usually have them at) I use 280* airconditioning so its always loud. And i know i dont need an amp with just speakers...
so any reccommendations? or should i just stick with my Pioneer Speaker plan?
Yes, go with the 6 1/2s and 5x7s. But if you want to be able to crank the stereo, you'll need an amp. Even a 25x4 amp would be a ton better than any head unit's power. When you play speakers at a loud volume without the proper power behind them they start to distort, which will cause them to blow. You'll get a much cleaner sound too.
I just put a pair of 6 1/5 pioneer ts80160R's in the doors of my 96 reg cab. I like them a lot. $100.00 at Best buy. The only installation problem was that the holes in the face guard of the speaker didn't line up, but it didn't matter because the door protects the speakers anyway. About a 1/2 hour install--no cutting, no special tools.
thats weird, when i bought 6 1/2 they didnt fit very well in my 87 i ended up with 5 1/4" but htey still sound good, anyone know if the wiring is in the back columns for rear speakers if it dosent have them from the factory?
I had a set of infinity 6.5's in my door and the built in coaxial tweeter was so tall it touched the door panel and caused sound distortion and the door panel didn't fit right.
Be sure that you check either crutchfield.com as mentioned earlier or be sure the speaker doesn't have a tall tweeter in the center.
I bought a set of 6.5" Sony XPlod at Wal Mart and they sound great for $55.
Follow AndyH's advice. Your stereo and speakers are probably fine. Pioneer and Clarion are fine products. I had an old Volvo and I put in a set of 6.5s on the trunk deck, a $100 stereo, and bought a 25x2 Sony amp from a buddy for $50. That was the sweetest sound I'd ever had in a car. The speakers were top dog though. What happens with an amp is that you now have your signal amplified so even at low volumes you have very clean and clear sound. Make sure you get an amp with a low Temporal Harmonic Distortion (THD). I think good amps have a THD around 0.04.
With more power you'll get a lot of sound out of what you already have.
I have infinity kappa 3-way 6 1/2" up front and the kappa 5x7 in the back with a 4 channel amp pushing 65 rms a channel. I am more than pleased with this setup. they are very clear at high volumes. For someone with o.k. hearing, my ears will hurt before they crackle. If you can find them on sale, the speakers cost around $200 total then just add the price of a 4 channel. If you don't care for the low bass, find an amp or headunit with a high pass filter.
To go with what Qman says, he's right about the THD, just FYI, any THD under .1 is basically inaudible.
I just bought an Alpine 9803, and Kappa fronts and rears for my truck with an Alpine 4 channel amp. Haven't had a chance to put it all in yet, but Im sure it'll sound great.
I think your best bet is to stick with what you have, and add a decent 4 channel. You'll be surprised how good your set up you have now will sound.
I have a 1994 F150 Reg Cab and I replaced mine with 6 1/2" in the front and 5 x 7" in the back. If your rear speakers are in the back corners (behind the seatbelt) then 5 x 7" is the only thing that will work without modification. I bought Pioneers and they were marked for Ford and Mazda. I also used some anti-vibration material to keep the speakers from rattling and it works very well.
I have polk speakers in mine, I have the db570's (5x7/6x8) in the back and a 6 1/2" componet system in the doors but I still need to mount the tweeters though. I have a pioneer cd player and a 20x4 amp that I had lying around. I eventually plan to swap the amp out for a 50x4 and get those tweeters installed.
