I bought my early 99 F350 PSD last september with 104k on the clock and it had a slight power steering pump noise that really wasnt noticable. Now I've got 128k on it and when it is below about 50 outside the pump is really loud and really roares when you turn and apply the brakes. Most of the time I can hear some sort of rattling and feel it in the brake pedal like the hydroboost is not getting good pressure, however the steering is as easy as ever and the brake boosting action is normal. The thing roars the loudest after I run my truck hard and will quiet down after a few minutes of normal driving. The fluid level is full to the full hot mark after it is good and warm. The pump looks identical to the pump that I have on my 83 F100 and it too likes to make noise. My real question is, what could be wrong to make a loud roaring noise like this, is it the pump itself or is there some blockage in the system and how do I test it?
I've used a product called Sea Foam in noisey Ford PS pumps with good results. Comes in pint cans, only takes a couple ounces. Some never have any more problems, others too far gone quiet down for a while, but only prolong the agony. Picked it up at NAPA>
I just put 1 ounce of the Ford Friction modifier in mine a couple days ago. What a difference. The noise is almost completely gone now, even at slow speeds. Might want to give that a try before thinking about replacing the pump. Got it at the Ford dealer, $4.95 for 4 ounces.
Are you sure it's the pump? When I've heard a noise from the pump it's been more of a whine or whirl. Almost sounds like your fan clutch acting normal???
Does your pump leak fluid? If it comes down to repairing it, I recommend buying a complete rebuild kit and doing it yourself (tear it apart and ensure the shaft and pump vanes aren't worn first). I've done several and it's a piece-o-cake.
