2.9 no spark problem, please help!

Please
Help

I have a 87 with a 2.9 and an automatic with roughly 130K on it. I have replaced the ign mod., distributor, plugs and wires. A couple of days ago the truck wouldn't start. It was running fine 5 min earlier. I went back in 20 min and fired right up. Has I started home quit while driving and left me stranded in intersection. About 30 min later fired right up and drove her home 40 miles no problem. Went to start her this morning no start. I checked and fuel is good but there is no spark at the plugs and the coil is not sparking to the distributor. What do I need to do?

Thanks,

Jesse

Get a multimeter and check all the cables from the battery. The ground, and the positive going to the battery, and the one to the starter solinoid on the firewall. If you get any reading over an ohm or 2 the wires are bad. I had a similar problem in my ranger and had to replace all the battery cables. As the wires corrode the problems get worse. When the wires heat up resistance is increased through the wire and no current can travel. Took me FOREVER to figure that one out. Hope this helps.

If you don't find any wiring problem try pulling the codes they might give you a clue to the problem area. Did you replace the entire distributor, did you buy a name brand TFI module, why did you replace these two items and when?

I have an '86 with the same problems, or rather had the same problems. After checking the TFI module (mounted on outside of distributor). It still wouldn't start, so the next step was to replace the pickup located inside the distributor. This process requires the removal and replacement of the distributor and it corrected all the problems I had been experiencing with the truck. The parts man at the store I purchased it from said I was probably wasting my money as "they never go bad," well, mine was bad and the truck runs like new now. Sure wish I would have replaced it earlier. The replacement cost was pretty reasonable, approx $36.00 tax included. If you do it yourself, it requires a small gear puller and that's about it as far as special tools are concerned.

Whenever I suspect a bad battery cable, I place a jumper cable in parallel with the suspect cable. If that's it - it will start. Good luck.
