Wondering if anybody knows what the heck the purpose of that additive is for that you add to your differential. I know it keeps the clutches lubed so they slide smoother but what if I don't put this additive in will it make my posi loud? or just make the clutches grab better? Any info is greatly appreciated as I am going to put 4.88 in my truck in a couple days, and want to have limited slip but still want both tires to grab well in loose terrain.

Friction modifier is used to keep the clutches from chattering and ruining themselves. If your rear diff. is anything bigger than an 8.8 then you should use two bottles of modifier.
I recently used Quaker State fully synth 75-140W and their tech support told me it already has friction mod in it(although there is no mention on the bottle). So no need to add any.
I found this out AFTER i had put in 1/2 a bottle of ford friction modifyer, but no problems so far.
At 5K I replaced the fluid in my rear axle with Mobil 1 synthetic 75w-140. I did not add any friction modifyer. I ran my Ranger like this for 9 years 140K with no problems. In fact, I had good posi. Philip.
Ianlavin is correct. Some gear oils already have the friction additive in them. Others don't, so you'd have to buy the friction additive separately and put it in with the new gear oil when you swap gears to the 4.88's. And always use the recommended weight gear oil (Ex: 75w-140). I used Royal Purple and everything's fine on mine (76K miles).
