need advice please....

hello all. one problem: the inline fuel filter can't be found. there would be one, wouldn't there?? but where is it?? i replaced the starter solenoid, the battery cables and the PCV valve. it fired right up, no jump needed. found a transmission leak and again i need advice. is it hard to replace the tranny gasket and filter?? if it's not very complicated can someone please pm (or post) me a basic step-by-step on what to buy, what to do and how to do it & i'll change them out. i've looked loads online for some shop manual pages to read for immediate help, yet i find i must buy one. does anyone have any information on the acuracy and quality of the shop manuals on CD's?? that seems to be the cheapest, but i don't want to sacrifice quality for cost. actually input on what basic manuals i'll need to repair, re-do and maintain the truck would be most welcome!!!! -- new problem found -- the metal tubing that runs from the PCV valve isn't connected, it's just laying behind the carburetor someone please tell me where it goes and how to connect it?? i am guessing... but wouldn't that be like a vaccum leak, contributing to the weak performance of the engine?? i bought a grounding strap (for between the hood & truck body), but i'm getting conflicting ideas on where to attach it. one told me to just get a screw and attach it on the firewall. another told me the paint would prevent it from grounding properly. it's only a foot long so i can't run it to any of the framework. personally i thought it was okay to attach it to the truck body. Opinions, please. i give my most sincere thanks in advance P.S. i have a 1978 F-150 4X4 step-side with a 2 bbl. 400.

WOW, try not to run your sentence's together and keep the color all as one. It just make's it easier on the eyeball's!

1st the gas filter is going to be located in the carb, Undo your fuel line and then remove the big"nut" on the carb and the filter should be there. That is where it was put by the factory at least.

2nd the trans filter and fluid is very simple to change, drop the pan from the trans, watch for the fluid to make a mess, undo the filter and replace with new and it is usually about 5 quart's to refill. Most torque converter's have a drain plug to completely change the fluid. Total capacity is around 11 quart's.

3rd the "metal pipe" has probably been broken from the fitting on the intake.

Welcome to the forum.

Please go easy with the colors, my eyes are burning! Bullets and spacing will help us quickly id your problems.

1) If you can't find a filter, you most likely don't have one. You're most likely running 5/16 line to the carb. Find a nice place to cut the rubber hose and install a universal filter from the parts store.

2) Tranny gasket and filter is a cinch as well. Installation is reverse of removal. Be sure to use Type F fluid. Any Napa or Autozone will sell you a kit with the pan gasket and filter for $10-$20.

3) PCV hoses usually connect to the back of the carb. You can replace any metal lines with rubber fuel hose.

4) Grounds work best when you scratch the paint and get metal to metal contact. I then suggest painting over with touch up paint so you don't get rust.

5) Shop manuals - I prefer Haynes over Chilton -- available at parts stores. Factory Ford manuals are much more comprehensive and expensive -- available on ebay. I recommend getting both.

Not as likely on a 78, but check the bottom of your fuel pump for a canister style filter. Twist off the canister, if there is one, and replace the cartridge inside it. This style was more common on pre 70 trucks, but I've seen a few of them post 70 that still have this style pump and filter set-up, although it's rare. It's usually what's there if there is not an inline filter in place.
