Question converting to electric fuel pump

I have a 71 F100 that I am putting an 89 302 in. I want to convert to an electric fuel pump to avoid switching out the timing chain, cover, etc. The external pumps I have found are rate at 1 to 3 psi, or 4 to 7 psi. This will be feeding a stock motorcraft 2 barrel carb (2100 series I think). Any recommendations on which pump to go with? I don't want to overwhelm the carb and dump extra fuel past the float bowl OR underfeed and starve the motor. I run pretty easy and don't plan to pump up anything else on the motor.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

Use the 4 to 7 psi model, 6 psi being ideal for your application.

most carbs run with the 4 to 7 psi. Mount it as close to the tank as possible. If you don't, you will fight vapor lock problems.

I used an auto parts store universal pump which sells for about $30 for several yrs. 6-7lbs pressure. But awhile back I hung a Holley Red pump on it. If you're worried about pressure you can install a pressure regulator in the line and dial any pressure you want.

Baitmaster, I really appreciate your post. I had the vapor lock problem with my pump mounted up front on the frame just behind the bumper. I would sit at idle for about 10 mins., or just in traffic for that amount of time and she would stall out. I could pull the line from the tank going to the pump and it would be dry. (Even though the tank was full). After sitting for a few minutes she would start up and be fine. Nasty little demon it was. It's working great now, Thanks again.

Indy Mike, you also want to get your power source for the pump from a 12v supply that powers up on (start position) and not (acc.). This way if you want to listen to your radio with the key turned back to (acc.), your pump isn't trying to fill up your carb at the same time, and alternatively trying to burn itself up.

Also, it is a good idea to install a filter prior to your pump. I have two little clear plastic jobbers before mine.

Good luck, Robert P.

Most electric pump instructions tell you to wire pump to oil pressure sensor so if you crash or something, the pump wont keep pumping fuel thru an open line or fitting. I chose not to do that, because I like the pump to operate for a few seconds before I turn the key to start.

Shutoff for the electric fuel pump is a good idea. Pick up a inertia switch at a wrecking yard. Ford, Linc etc fuel injected inertia switch is located in trunk near left hinge.
