What is the proper procedure to set the manual lever on 4x4?
This is the way I am doing it...
I put the Bronco in Neutral
I push down on the shifter and shift into 4L or 4H
BUT... I get Screeeeech and I cannot put it in 4x4
For mine with the lever, to go into 4x4 high, I can be in drive just as long as I am stopped and you dont have to push it down, just pull back and your in 4high. To get in 4low, you have to put the truck in neutral, then pull the lever straight back to 4high, next push it down and pull back real fast. On my truck if I push the lever down then go one back to neutral and then finally go to 4low I will get grinding. You have to pull the lever back from 4high in one quick motion or you will get grinding. Hope this helps.

my old 88 shifted on the fly to 4hi but you had to stop, put the tranny in N and then go 4lo my new 88 is push button which i'm not crazy about will fix later.
well I'll see if I can explain it better. For just putting the truck into 4h, all you have to do is pull the lever back until it stops (you don't have to push down on the lever at all, if you do, you will go past the 4h postion), and then a light on the dash should light up telling you that you are in 4 wheeldrive. There really shouldn't be any grinding noises when putting it in 4h. For 4L, you put the truck in neutral, then pull the lever back until it stops (don't push down on it yet) the 4x4 light should light up on the dash, then push the lever down as far as it will go and pull the lever back until you cant any more (don't stop in the neutral postion or you will get grinding) and if it locked in 4L right, the 4low light should light up right under the 4x4 light, if it doesn't light up or you get a lot of grinding, try it over. To get it out of 4L, push the lever down and push the lever forward until the 4h postion, once again don't stop in the neutral postion. I hope that was better, if not, let me know.
