Cool Fingbs!

Ohh I'm quite ticked off after a long day and night working on getting the truck ready to roll!!!

Got the MSD all installed nice and neat got the radiator in went to crank no fire! Starter sounds like crap too!

Difference 300 to 351?

Went out and hooked up my spark tester to no.5 since it was the closest and easyest to get to. Cranked again no spark, its now 11:20pm so after a day of making things all nice and neat I rip all the wires out of the loom for testing. I check MSD's trooble shooting guide. Connect wires to bla spark bla! No spark replace coil test again. It gives a bone rattling spark which jumps the cheezy accel wires and leaves my left side numb for 10 min. I hook it all back up pump the gas a few times for luck then boom! A nice fire erupts from the carb onto the maifold which I had the site plugs out of carb to yep there was plenty of fuel to burn, I run and grab the extingiser and put it out no real damage. After washing off the powder crap I pulled all the spark plugs out just to make sure no water sits in the engine overnight then give up for the night.

Today's another day. I check to make sure the timing is correct, pull the cap jump the solenoid. Interesting, engine cranks but the rotor doesent spin. Ok maybe somthing inside the dizz broke. I pull it out spin it nope. Check that theres an oil pump drive in her yep. I push down on the oil pump drive to make sure its locked in. Seems to be fine crank it again looking at the pump drive no movemnt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Guess I'm going to have to pull a rocker cover and see if we got movement there next.

What a PITA!

Your distributor is driven off the cam shaft, the oil pump driveshaft is then driven off the distributor. Check your timing gears and chain, as they drive the cam shaft. Sounds like a pain, but it's likely where your problem is, providing the distributor drive gear looks fine when removed from the engine.

Yep, I realized that after I posted but was just too ticked off to edit:doh:
I guess it one of those never ending monday hangovers.

Well The drive gear was the problem, well half of it anyway. The part I glaced at when I removed the distributor was nice. I looked at the rest and it was toasted. Got another dizzy Azone, got no.1 piston up, pop'd the new one in, nothing, re-routed the wires 180* and she fired to life.

The engine sounds real strong tad slow of the timing, of course most uncorked systems sound nice but even with 2 vacuum ports open it idled nicely.

I wish I could finish it off tonight but I'm going out of town for a few days so I guess saturday will have to work.

Definitely have to set the timing, and be sure to plug those vacuum ports with proper plugs. Most people just use a piece of vacuum line and a screw. There are proper plugs made for the job at the cost of less than a nickle a piece. If you absolutely have to do the vacuum line and screw idea, at least put silicon on the screw before twisting it in. As for your starter sounding like crap, yes there could be a difference between one for a 300 and one for a 351. I'd change it out for a known 351 starter, and see how it does. You might get away with shimming it for proper clearance, but unlikely.
