which trans do i have? 87 f150 4.9 5 speed manual 2x4. Door post sticker under t says its an A. In the Haynes manual to 1996 it looks like more like the Mazda M50D R2 4X2. Its not the BT T-18 and not the ZF S5 42. Is that the better trans. or the one with all the problems?
The door post sticker is the code for an NP 435, which is a 4 speed, so we know that's wrong. It's *possible* that it's a ZF, but much more likely that it's a Mazda 5 speed.
The M5OD isn't a bad tranny for what it is, which is a light duty truck tranny. As long as you don't abuse it and keep it full of fluid, it will be fine. It has a worse reputation around here than it deserves.
What about mine? My 92 F-150 auto has a 20 bolt tranny pan. Which seemed to shock the guys at Oreillys. They thought it should have been a 16 hole or so pan. The truck is 2wd also.

sorry your right its a 4 speed. NP 435 who make it? Ther are three choices in my Haynes manual for 80 to 96 but i dont see that one.
The NP 435 is made by New Process Gear Co. It is probably the strongest tranny ever put in a half ton truck. It was used in trucks with a GVWR up to 26,000 lbs. You could drop it off a building, put it back in your truck, and drive off with it.
I think my E4OD has 20 bolts, but I can't remember for sure, but here's another way to tell. The E4OD tranny pan isn't flat, and has METRIC stamped in it, whereas the AOD tranny pan is flat. Thats the most obvious difference between the two.
My '80 F350 had an NP435 in it and this tranny was around a long time before that. I agree that it was a rugged transmission. However, I thought it a bit rough around the edges. It reminded me of the lumber trucks I drove in the '50s (which may have had the same tranny). The ZF 5 speed in my current truck is much nicer. Very smooth and crisp shifts, much quieter too (tho any manual will make noise as the gears wear over the years).
