SURGING IDLE 1988 RANGER
SURGING IDLE 1988 RANGER
I HAVE A 1988 RANGER WITH A 2.3 FI 4CYL. WHEN IT IDLES IT SURGES HIGH THEN BACK LOW AND WILL THEN USUALLY DIE. I LOOKED FOR A VACUM LEAK AND FOUND NONE. BUT WHEN I UNHOOKED THE MAP SENSOR IT QUIT BUT WILL NOT IDLE UP HIGH. IS THIS MY PROBLEM AND HOW CAN YOU TEST THE MAP SENSOR TO SEE IF IT IS ANY GOOD.
SURGING IDLE 1988 RANGER
I don't have this experience with Ranger engines, but with 5.0s in Mustangs.
This sounds identical to symptoms that those engines have when the idle air bypass valve (IAB) is dirty. I recently purchased a '93 Ranger 4.0L, and that engine also has an IAB on it. If there is one on your engine, remove it and clean it out good with intake cleaner, and that should help the problem.
It worked like a charm for my 5.0 every time I had a surging idle. Good luck.
