i have a 99 xsport and am thinkin about puttin a flowmaster on it. but i cant decide if i want the 40 or 50 series. i want it loud but not annoying on the inside. if yall ave any input on which ine to choose or another brand of muffler in general i would apperciate it
My suggestion is to find a shop that will let you "try out" the muffler. 100 dollars a pop for mufflers isn't exactly fun. If not...you're taking a big chance on it. Find some people with dual's and ask them about their setup. I personally LOVE glasspacks....and the only Flowmaster's I've heard were Delta's and I didn't take kindly to the sound. Anyways....its all to your ears. The 40's are gonne give off resonance no matter what. My friends 302 mustang with dual FM40D's resonates like CRAZY. The 50's are supposed to cure that...but at what cost to sound?
40 series with Delta-flow is supposed to reduce interior resonance, and i've found in my 2.9 Bronco II, it has less interior resonance than my stock exhaust back whenever I had it.. except at full throttle or even 70% open then it's not resonance, just that performance growl. The 40's are supposed to be for offroad and race, they're semi-street legal.. depends on the area you're in. The 50's also have delta-flow technology, and they're not supposed to be as throaty sounding, so they do take a little more or then interior resonance down, but whenever you step on it, they're not as loud. If you want it really quiet go with the 70 series. If you are wanting loud I would go with dynomax bullets.
I removed a pair of 40 series because the resonance was nausiating. Could not stand it.
Put on 50 series Deltas and much better but am not really happy with the sound. Am living with them now but considering a change.
I think the FM 40's are pretty nice sounding. If you run them straight out the back, it won't be quite as loud in the cab as if you dump them underneith, obviously. My buddy ran duals with 40's on his 94 f-150 (302)...I think it sounds pretty cool. It's fairly loud, and has some crackle when you get on it. Nothing compared to glasspacks tho. I put a si/do 40 on my 95. I'd be willing to try out some other muffler if I ever redid mine. It's all a matter of what sound you're looking for. Hope some of this jibberish helps.
Oh, if you do decide to go with FM's...look at "performancepeddler" on ebay, has them for like half the price of most.
50 series would be quieter still, but I don't like the sound.
I completely agree. i don't like the 50 series. my mom put that on her 95 Bronco with a 351W and i don't like it. my dad put 40's on his 96 Mustang GT with the 4.6 and i like it a lot better. sounds beefy. only difference between his stock exaust and the 40's is it's a lot louder and tones are a little higher. The previous owner did some tuning and it's pretty stout. but i'm not gonna go flows on my truck cause i gotta be a rebel in the family and try something else, completely different. But if i'd have to choose go with the 40's. they aren't much louder than stock unless you really get into it. but be prepared to be suprised when you open it up.
I had a 40 on mine and it was too quiet. I am running straight cats and it still too quiet. Now, I'm gonna cut one of the cats off and then get me some single-chambered flowmasters
