1988 302 Problem

In my 1988 F150 the 302 does not really hold a given rpm well. The other night I was reving the engine up to try and hold it at about 2000 rpm so I could check the oil pressure reading and I noticed that it would not hold steady at 2000. It would hold for a sec and then it would jump 200 rpm or so and then it would also drop 200 rpm or so. After each time it would return to 2000 but it would not hold steady. Any thoughts? Anyone else ran into this one? Thanks guys.

The motor has just over 100k on it and the last tune-up I did was about 9 months ago or so. I may look at the cap and rotor soon. I replaced those with the last tune-up and used the brass terminals. I have heard that Ford does not really "like" the brass terminals. Not sure if that is correct or not. You think that a loose timing chain could do that? The engine runs pretty well besides that. It does seem like it needs new lower end bearings because of a slight knock on a cold start-up and the oil pressure has started to slip a little too. (Installed mechanical guage.) Any thoughts on this? I did check the codes and there were none for the TPS. Think that there could be a dead spot? Thanks for the reply.

i would replace the tps first and formost and give the rig another tune up. then check your timing it should be at 10* btdc with the spout connector removed. this should cure your ills. might also run some seaFoam thru the motor before the tune up this will help clean the inside of motor and fuel system like injectors incase there is an issue there. also replace the fuel filter when you do the tune up.

good luck
