4.0 Ignition Problem
Have '88 truck w/4.0 V6, that runs fine, then stops just as if the key was turned off. After a cooling period of 30-45 minutes, will restart, and run for an unknown time, then repeat. Referred to Hanes manual, which advised replacing the Ignition Control Module, mounted on the distributor on this model, which I did. I drove 10 miles, and it quit again, so pulled it home. Started it up then, and parked it. I am assuming the coil is ruled out because it has no other symptoms, such as backfiring, etc.. I also thought if it is the coil, it will just die, and not heal itself over time. No previous problems for the past year of ownership. Trying to avoid the garage, if possible, but not a mechanic, either. Thanks in advance for your help!

Just curious, how do you have an 88 with 4.0, I thought they didn't become available until 89 or 90. Are you sure that you don't have the 2.9, unless of course the 4.0 was dropped in. But 4.0's also have a Distributerless Ignition System and I didn't think were suseptable to that module failure. I had the same problem wth an 89 Bronco II that had a 2.9, but the new module did the trick for me. Could be a gasket leak or something along that line. Almost bought an F150 that had a bad head gasket that would just die after about 10 minutes of driving. It was at an auction and they determined it was the gasket by checking the radiator for hydrocarbons. If it is an early 4.0, they were prone to gasket failures, but usually it involves the engine running rough. Sorry I couldn't be of more help, just wanted to make sure you had the right info out there so you can get the right help.
