Differential Speed Sensor

Hello,

I've had a rumbling coming from the back of my '87 B2 for about 2 months now. I thought it was a bad wheel bearing, but my mechanic tells me the speed sensor in the differential is broken and that it's preventing the ABS from working (the light on the dash is on). R&R of the diff will cost $1400.

Honestly, though I like the vehicle, I don't want to invest $1400 in it.

How safe is it to drive the vehicle as-is, rumbling and all? My Bronk is a commuter workhorse that I flog 90 miles a day.

How difficult is it to swap differentials? I have access to a lift.

thanks!

daniel

Unless the speed sensor broke off in the housing and chewed up the differential, you shouldn't have to rebuild the whole differential to replace the RABS speed sensor. I don't have much experience with the speed sensor, but I think it just screws into the Diff housing.

Differential needs to be replaced: bent gears

Okay ... I think I cleared things up with my mechanic.

I was told that there are bent gears in my '87 B2 differential, and that some of the gears have broken teeth.

How much longer can I drive my B2 like this? It rumbles when it goes down the road, but it certainly goes.

How involved is it to replace the differential? I have access to a lift, so I can attempt it myself.

Alternately, how much would it cost to have a mechanic go in there and replace the bent/broken gears?

My B2 is a commuter workhorse I flog 90 miles a day for 5 days a week.

thanks!

Rebuilding a differential is "doable" as a DIY project, if you have a really good manual, the proper tools, and the patience to do it right. Setting up the gears in particular requires very careful work. Tolerances are very tight, and there isn't any room for "that will be good enough." Many prefer to let a professional rebuild a differential so it gets done right.
Alternatively, get an entire axle from a junkyard truck and swap that in. From what I can gather, it will cost about the same, and you won't have to deal with setting up gears.

I had the same problem on my 87 BII it was easy to replace whole rear end,I paid about 350 from junk yard, it will lock up. That switch in the the top of rear end houseing is call anti brake sensor, the ring gear has a gear with teeth atach to it, the teeth will brake off,
