I am looking for opinions on vehicle security. I have a 2005 KR SD and want to be able to protect it as much as possible. I have used a unit from Compustar in the past but am looking for something that may interface with a GSM pda phone. I really don't care about external sirens, just alerts and possibly vehicle tracking.
as for just standard car alarms, i used to work in the buisness and ive also owned all the brands... for low end "viper" brand allarm or "Code" brand, same company are well made functional basic alarms... if you want all the bells and whistles then id recommend "Clifford" as a high end securtiy system.. they have many models that offer differnt levels of protection... if like you say you dont need a siren( thats about the only resistance to theft alarms offer).. then id say you dont need and alarm at all...... look up "lowjack"... that is a vehicle tracking system that can be accessed through any police vehicles computer... system will cost you about $500 and may have a small yearly fee... but if your truck is stolen, you call it in.. then nearest officer pulls them over, within minutes, its that easy..... i stick the "club" on my steering wheel and have a high end "Clifford" alarm, but i just avoid places that im out of earshot the best I can... especially at night... if my truck gets stolen i want to track it down myself ..be the judge, jury and prosecutioner, and executioner all in one.. so i dont want to involve the silly police with the lowjack...lol
The problem with the club is it is hardened steel on a mild steel stearing wheel. The low lifes around hear cut the wheel with a hack saw and leave you the club in your parking space. I have a remote battery disconect on mt truck. It is not perfect but if it will not start they will not drive it away.
You could install a toggle switch somewhere inside the truck, under the seat, under the dash, just hide it so a thief would have a hard time finding it. It disables the truck from starting. You should wire into either the ignition, or the fuel pump. Ignition wires can be accessed under the dash. Fuel pump can be accessed under the passenger side foot panel.
If it's wired to the fuel pump, and the switch is accessible from the passenger seat, then if you or your wife get car-jacked, you could turn off the car using the switch. Granted, a handgun is much more affective at stopping a car-jacker than a Radio Shack toggle switch.
Just get one of those window stickers, "Vehicle secured by Smith & Wesson"
:-)
Seriously, I think all of these are good ideas. My dad's 79 F150 was stolen out of his closed garage by an escapee from the local penitentiary. Luckily, the only thing missing when the truck was found 2 days later was half of the can of Pepsi that was sitting in the cupholder. Even thirsty criminals prefer the taste of Coke! :-) The guy evidently couldn't figure out how to drive a stick or switch gas tanks or something...since the truck ended up only about 7 miles away.

There is a "club type" device that goes under your brake pedal and keeps thieves from stepping on the brake. every car out now you have to step on the brake to shift into gear. If I find it, I'll post it.
Some one beat me to it, somewhat! Park the truck in the back yard with the dogs andif they bark - Shoot first and then ask questions. You only need to call the police is there is a body to be cheaked in (like a deer)! This seems to have worked for me.
Nice alarm,S.S. . But is that a chevy truck? Code alarm makes an alarm that has a normally open relay for a starter kill. If the power to the alarm is cut the truck will not start, the alarm has to be dis-armed.
