gauge interchange

will the 70s truck model gauges with a 100 mph speedo work on a 70s model with the 85 mph speedo and still be accurate? i have a 78 f150 that needs a gauge cluster, all i can find is a 75-76 cluster with a 100 mph speedo. is the wiring plug the same? and will the other gauges be accurate? help if you can...

I don't know about the wiring, but I read somewhere that all speedos are calibrated the same. I think it is 1000 revolutions per mile.

The speedo will work fine. The big difference is some clusters had guages and some had idiot lights and each is wired different. So make sure the 'new' cluster is the same style as your old one and all will be fine.

my old one has gauges and the other has lights, so that means the harness is different?

Right, it won't work. The guages cluster has a larger plug in than the lights cluster. What's wrong with your current cluster? If all you want is the 100mph speedo, you can just swap it into your original cluster and all will be well.

I can add to what Marty said, the alternator circuit and regulator are wired differently too, depending on if you have an idiot light, or a amp guage.

i took my cluster out to replace some bulbs and the plastic backing just crumbled. its shot and all i can find is the one with idiot lights. they must have changed them in the late 70s.
