When I bought my comp it had 256mb DDR ram. I put in another 256 one next to it and when I go under properties in my comp. it only shows I have 488mb. Is this right, or should it show 512mb?
Make sure its 256 and not 128, it's possible you picked up the wrong one. The slot you install them in doesn't matter in this case, but a lot of times it does matter, at least it is registering more RAM.
my computer did this also. i returned the mem and bought a different brand and problem fixed. Sometimes certain brands don't regester the correct way. Try a different brand. I bought a PNY originally and Bout A different brand(can't remember the name). Just my $0.02
when the puter reboots it checks ram, might try looking at what it says it has there
start,all programs,accessories,system tools,system information (win xp) <WIN xp>tells me I have 512.0 megs ram

It should still show the correct amount of installed RAM...even if on-board video is sharing some of it.
Nope. My laptop has a shared video card. When I boot my computer I can go to the BIOS settings and change how much of my RAM is allocated to my video. RIght now it is set to 16 megs. When I right click on My Computer and go to properties it says I have 496 MEGS.
Total Memory is 512 MEGS - 16 megs for video = 496 MEGS left.
I think maybe that your video card is set up to use 24 megs of RAM for its memory. Thats just what I am thinking.
Ya, I think that is the case. When I go to system information like azbluewolf said it shows 512. If i right click on my computer and go to properties it shows 488.
