Guys I need help, working on a 1985 Bronco with 351W, C-6 trans. Have just replaced the trans and flex plate. The starter does not engage properly have changed the cables on the battery tried another starter with the same problem. Has anyone had this problem and what did you do to fix it.
You may need to shim the starter out. Try putting a couple washers under the bolts (temporarily) to see if it engages without grinding. If that works, there is a shim made out of .10 steel available for ford starters that moves it out away from the flex plate a little so it doesn't grind.
I don't know why that happens, but it must be a common occurrence because the shim is at Autozone in the "HELP" hardware section.
