my voltage regulator has started making a tapping noise.does that mean it`s on it`s way out , or is something else going on.also the instrument lights and the interior lights have started flickering a little.thanks for any info...........wayne
Check your grounds. I'd say remove each one, clean them, and reattach them, making sure that there's good metal to metal contact. If you have a 6 volt system, make sure you have a good zero-gauge ground strap running from the engine to the battery. I had one 'rebuilt' at my NAPA parts store; they swedged news ends on it. It's real purdy, and it works great.
My 6cyl truck had a ground that ran from the bellhousing by the intake manifold to a bolt on the firewall that was right behind the instrument panel, a zero gauge wire that ran from a bolt hole on the bellhousing near the starter, to the battery, and a bare ground strap that ran from the same connection near the starter to the frame.

Pcmenten is steering you right!! Grounds grounds and more grounds!! Also if a Generator or Alternator doesn't have a ground PUT ONE ON IT! One thing that struck my mind when you said you had a constant click in that regulator (external) was maybe your connection at your generator isn't too good, make sure it is! Next, consider, sometimes the part inside a generator called the commutator (The part the brushes ride on, which is slotted and is copper) can have a bad spot and every revolution it turns it skips charge on that small area making the regulator click on and off for charge. After you fix or check these things, and if you find your problem regulator as the problem, the smartest thing to do, is put a universal electronic regulator on instead!! They work great, but remember on these you must install them with one of your battery post disconnected or they short as soon as you plug them up, install one, then hook the battery back up, I think it's your wiring or that commutator on the armature of that generator........Janet
actually it`s not constant,it comes and goes.it took me a while to figure out exactly where it was coming from.but it`s definately inside the regulator.i think that my grounds are o.k. but i`ll check them out anyway.i also have a spare v.r. around that i think i`m gonna try out.thanks.......wayne
