We're with ya bro! Sticker shock isn't anything to be ashamed of, $3600 is a chunk of change. Sounds like your transmission/rear end was a never ending series of aw-shucks, the more you look, the more you see. I'll have one of those leaving my driveway this week. 
I see that there's an informal role call of Montana people over in the regional chapters, look in the High Plains chapter:

You might get lucky and hook up with someone near you who does have a shop. It's always good to have a Partner in Grime, no true gearhead can resist getting dirty anyway.

I will say it seems like a deal compared to body work though. That is the biggest scam IMO. Everybody gives the exact same number of hours per line item and runs about the same hourly rate. So the only difference is what items they put on the quote.
I was looking at replacing two pieces of sheet metal on a truck (fender and outside box side) and it was $3000. No thanks. I'm sure it's because 95% of the people who come in there aren't paying for the work themselves, insurance is. At least mechanics have to compete in the real world.
