I have located a 58 big window local, good 292 4 spd....what are some areas to be wary of as to body rust and mechanical stuff to look out for....how many big windows were made in the 1/2 and 3/4 ton trucks ???? If its a parts truck Ill let you guys know as it would be headed to the boneyard otherwise...I am going to look at it tomorrow and will let ya know what I find....are the Y block trucks in either series rare these days or ???

Sounds like you found a unmolested truck. Common rust problems are lower rear front fenders front cab supports cab corners and rear of the bed on the back. Mechanical stuff? just normal things to check Y blocks are tough and they came stock in these trucks. Mine has been great. I would say that all the 57 to 60 trucks are rather rare. And the big back windows seem to be more desirable.

 

if you have to take it to the boneyard,remove the big back window. i imagine it would get a good price all by it's self. just a thought. oh, the windshield too.

 

I saw another big window at same yard a cpl months ago...I do have the rear glass from it if anyone is in need......

Update....i went and looked at it the other day....looks good from a distance
hehe....its definately a project 1/2 ton 2wd big window and has a nearly perfect w/shield....ding might be fixable...is a custom cab

the box all in all is pretty good compared to some I have seen....up front on left half is pretty solid...right fwd 2 inches needs replaced...i did have a heavy bar to test for holes. rear is good, but bed floor in rear 2 crossmember areas are bowed...not too bad and probably fixable.
Tailgate is there and rust free, but bowed on lower part,,Ford lettering pretty good cond. upper rail needs reattach on left...spot welds broke. has chains and latch levers. rear roll pan looks solid...was backed tight into a bush. last licensed in 97 as i recall.
Cab....was a radio delete, holes cut in, looks like for 61-6 type radio. floors are very rough...left is way worse then right from what I saw from inside. both steps are rusted thru. rear cab corners not as bad as some 61-6 trucks Ive seen as thats my interest. cab panel isnt too bad, need a little skin graft, but inner panels need replaced. seams looked tight as to top to rear panel, gutters werent rotted thru from what I could tell.
It is a 4 spd Y block truck. Doors are a tossup...right has acres of thick mud in it in lower front some of which felll of long ago...bottom wasnt too bad. Left is better, but could have tons of mud too...no left door glass. Fenders....both fixable, left is better then right with lower rust starting to bleed thru...not sure if mud in lowers. right is tweaked at rear lower.
Grille, chrome which needs replate for show, would clean up for a driver...has 2 dings in easy to access areas...mesh area is fine. both h/l doors were ok. lower valance is tweaked alot. non orig. front bumper. hood is perfect...non window washer truck opens and closes with a bang....strong hinges. Under hood looks good, didnt hear it run, motor is orange...Im not sure of correct color for 58...let me know....nopt a greasball from what I could tell up top. no air cleaner but has orig carb from what I could tell...no tag though looks good as far as molestation under hood goes.....so, thats the scoop....this is basicly a firesale....kid got in trouble, mom said sell it...etc....if you want pics, let me know...I took alot. truck is in Wa state
