Talking High Frequency Vibration

Hi all !!
I have my new '05 PSD 250SC, 4X4. Love the vehicle. Got a question. Since this is my 1st 4x4, I need a little insight. I have a high frequency vibration at 45 - 58 mph. I've tried all the usual tests, neutral gear coasting, touching brakes slightly, etc. and it feels like it may be the driveshaft. Do the 4x4s have a characteristic of doing this or should this be taken as seriously as I feel ?? Other than this, it has no other things for me to question at this time. Any way thoughts appreciated.

Thanks,
Bill in KY

If this vibration happens at about 1600 to 1800 rpm then it is probably vibration from the turbo pedistal which has been common with the 6.0.

Can you describe the vibration a little better? I consider a high frequency vibration something that would be associtated with the turbo turbines. Drivelines don't spin that fast.

Do you have any mods? Lift kit? Tires?

The engine rpm seems to have nothing to do with this vibration. I waited for the turbo to slow down at idle, while in neutral (TorkShift) and the vibration was still there. It goes away completely below 48 mph and above 58 mph. It seems its worst at 55. I'm going to drive it tomorrow with the 4x4 engaged and see if anything changes. The truck only has 650 miles on it so we'll see.

Thanks for the comeback

Are your hubs disengaged? Jack up one of the front wheels. Rotate it. The U-joint inside shouldn't move. If so, turn the hubs to lock and then to auto. That should disengage them.

Other vibration could be drive shaft angle at the center driveshaft joint. Take it in to the dealer.

Since he has a Supercab truck (assuming it is a SWB) it doesn't have a carrier bearing, so the shaft angle shouldn't be an issue unless the truck is lifted (I can't remember if the LWB SC's have a carrier bearing or not).

My bet is with you on the hubs, mine have an annoying vibration on occasion...

BTW, you've got mail.

I say its the bearing carrier or you have the general tires on it. General tires are very problematic. I was just at the dyno last weekend. I saw general tires on a truck. I told my buddy lets get away from these rear wheels. you should have seen everybody cringe and turn around when those tires started distorting. so If you are running general or continental tires they may be the culprit.

With other vehicles I have worked on high frequency vibration has been caused by an out of balance driveshaft, but these are all on vehicles with IRS - far more sensitive to driveline vibe than live rear axles - it still could be the cause of it though.

Also you might want to check your driveshaft alignment, that can cause a vibration, but its usually a relativly low frequency one.

I have seen turbo's out of balance on other vehicles, but it is dependant on engine rpm and load

After all this, honestly I don't know what could be causing it... It could also be a wheel out of balance - does it appear to come from onw corner of the vehicle???

I can feel this vibration more in the seat, as though it is coming from the chassis. Yes it is a long wheel base, I don't believe in SWBs, so it may be the carrier bearing angle. I sure appreciate all your thoughts. This is the greatest exchange of info going.

hodgekuter a vibration that you can feel in the seat of you pants is usualy a bud U-joint or driveshaft out of balance. randys ring and pinion has a vibration analysis sheet on thier website check it out.

Hodgekuter,
My truck had the same vibration that you are explaining. It came on about 45-55 MPH. Had the drive shaft indexed and it is extremly smooth now.

Wait till you pack one full of sandy wet mud and mesquite branches. Gets a little rough until you get a couple miles down the paved highway at 70 and all the mud finally flies off.

Explain to me what "indexing" would involve with this animal. I have a notion it is the driveshaft or carrier.
