Angry Steering Problems

I have a 2004 SD 6.0 4wd CC and have a problem with steering, when ever you come to a stop the steering gets hard to turn. Took it into the shop, They claim that the "condition is normal" gave a web site answer from ford stating that the condition is normal with hydroboost or vacuum brakes...
anyone have this problem? and what can be done to take care of this?

I have the same truck as you and have just gotten used to having the truck moving when turning the wheel. My trucks steering was also quite stiff when new and seemed to not track well when going down the hiway. I was always correcting the truck. As the truck got some miles on it the steering has loosened up and I don't notice the wandering as I once did.

It definantly tracks better now than when new. The steering was tighter then. I remember seeing a few other complaints on this about a year ago but have not seen much on it in a while.

My truck does the same thing. I have just come to believe that you need to be moving to turn the heavy tires. No problem when rolling, only at a stop. Hasn't caused me any real concern. BTW my truck is an '04 F250 CC 4x4 with 33x12.50 tires.

It is good driving technique to turn the wheels while rolling rather than when not moving. It's a friction thing and easier on the tires.

So, no one has come up with a fix? Boy, you spend alot of money for these things and they just cannot build them right... Had a 2003 SD F350 and did not have this problems, Does the 05 have this problem? Might be time to trade this one too!

I haven't noticed an issue with hard turning on my '05 although I have noticed it likes to wonder a bit. As for the hard turning being "normal" for vehicles with power brakes how would they explain my wifes Tahoe with the same size tires as my truck? I can turn hers from lock to lock with one finger on the wheel standing still. Her truck has the GM varialble assist steering which is ok I guess.

fink: There is no way I would buy in to that normal condition business. Your power steering on this truck should never be hard to turn unless all 4 tires are buried in mud or something.

Sounds like the same dealer mnfordchick has/had. Find someone that knows what they are doing.

When I went from my '02 F 150 sc long bed FX4 to my '04 I thought a bumper car at the fair had better handling characteristics...took about a month to get over it. Now I can't tell the difference. I jump into my brother's truck that is the same as my '02 and back in mine with no wandering issues. just got to get used to it.

But who knows...for you, the hard to turn issue could be related to your wandering issue.

Change dealers and good luck.
