I have a 1998 Expedition Eddie Bauer, 2WD, with a 5.4L. It has 93,000 miles. Over the weekend my son left the dome light on and the battery went dead. I recharged the battery and it drove fine for 2 days (I know about the learning time).
Now it is running really rough at idle. It runs fine when driving and accelerates normally. So far, I've cleaned out the air intake and put some additive in the fuel.
Autozone ran the codes and I had the following:
1. Bank 1, Sensor 2 (O2)
2. Bank 2, Sensor 2 (O2)
3. Fuel Air Metering
4. Fuel Air Metering
5. System 2 Lean Bank 2
Could this be the IAC valve? Any help is appreciated.
Check for a vaccuum leak in the PCV line. There is a rubber elbow at the extreme rear and top of the engine that tends to rot and develop a leak over time. It is easy to find and cheap to fix. It does cause rough running and stalling at idle. If the leak is exteme you will get a check engine light.
I checked the two elbows as mentioned on tyger25's web article. They were soft and the elbow below the IAC valve felt like it had a crack in it (you can't see that one, and have to go by feel).
I printed out Tyger25's article, called my Ford dealer and gave them the part number he used. They had the part for $54.95. I spent about 20 minutes total on swapping out the old vaccum lines, and now my 98 Expy is running perfect.
One thing left.... My compass is stuck pointing east, and I heard there is a pinhole for resetting it. Can anyone help with the location?
The pinhole is behind the rear view mirror on the compass control module. If you have an owner's manual, there are detailed instructions on how to recalibrate.
